The mayor of Mykolaiv Oleksandr Sienkevych said that specialists are currently working on the idea of creating a new coat of arms of the city.

For this purpose, a contest was announced, in which the author of the best sketch will receive 200,000 hryvnias. These funds will be personally allocated by the mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych, the head of Mykolayiv RMA Vitalii Kim and people's deputy Oleksandr Haidu.

Later, the mayor explained why such an idea arose: «The fact is that it depicts a galley with oars. Without sails. I think you all understand what such a galley means, who worked on it to death. We are not rowing slaves, not slaves. We absolutely do not need such symbols in the identity of our city!».

Secretary of the Mykolayiv City Council Dmytro Falko supported the idea of replacing the coat of arms of the city. In his opinion, the new coat of arms will be more modern and take into account the recent history of Mykolaiv.
