The situation with waste from the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant is deteriorating. Environmentalists warn of the threat of a breakthrough and pollution of the Bug Estuary.

Officials reported this to Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture Oleksii Soboliev, according to the State Environmental Inspectorate of the South-Western District.

Andriy Kuziuk, acting first deputy head of the inspectorate, stressed the critical situation that has developed after the company stopped alumina production. In particular, sludge pit No. 1 is located dangerously close to the Bug Estuary, and in the event of a breakthrough, there is a risk of sub-sludge water entering the water body.

In turn, sludge pit №2 poses a threat of dust pollution, especially in the summer heat, wind and prolonged lack of precipitation.

«So far, a man-made disaster has been averted, but the situation is tending to deteriorate. We need government intervention,» said Andrii Kuziuk.

Earlier it was reported that from August 2022 to September 2023, 12 cases of uncontrolled dust ing from sludge pits No. 1 and No. 2 of the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant were recorded at the plant.
